does a 21 inch paintball barrel help more than smaller barrels? Is a flatline or apex?

Nope. In fact, it may hinder performance. The paintball uses the first 8″ or so to get up to speed, much longer than that will yield adverse effects simply due to friction. DO NOT try to relate paintball to the world of firearms. Paintballs do not fly fast enough nor do they have the aerodynamics for rifling to work. What if the barrel was 40″ long? You think it would have more accuracy yet? I think you get my point. There comes a time when the length is a hindrance, and for the world of paintball, it’s anything over 16″. Longer barrels are made because people think they look cool and buy them. I’ll make a 40″ barrel if enough people want to fork over the cash for it.
For woodsball players, I recommend going with a 12″ barrel. A little shorter and easy to move around with. Less chances of digging it in the dirt. For speedball players, front players get the same 12″ barrel for the same reason. Back players should go with something like a 16″. Back players use this barrel length to “dig in” to the bunkers to help conceal their body, while still laying down serious paint to cover lanes. They usually don’t move much/at all, so having to deal with the “sword like” extension on their marker is not a problem.
As for accuracy, the barrel is going to have little to no effect. When it comes to accuracy for paintball, you need to look at two things. #1 ball roundness and consistency. #2 air consistency. An air regulator that outputs EXACTLY the same pressure every time is going to be more accurate. Matching your paint diameter to the diameter of your barrel, and having those paintballs be perfectly round is also a huge increase in accuracy. Ever see someone with a “barrel kit”? Or a barrel with multiple back pieces that screw together? Each piece is a couple hundredths of an inch smaller/larger. They select and play with the barrel size that matches the paint they happen to be playing with that particular day. On that note, paint swells and shrinks with temp and humidity changes. So size up your paintball every day. Even if you’ve played with that paint before.
